Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - March 2014

It's a rather blah Bloom Day this March. Looking back at previous March GBBD posts, I'd usually have a few daisies, irises, poppies or roses blooming by now. Thanks to a hard freeze a couple of weeks ago, everything's been delayed or knocked out this year. The one new bloom so far are the species tulips, T. clusiana, and there aren't many of them!

That's it for this Bloom Day post. Five more days until the start of spring - can't wait! Thanks to Carol at May Dreams Gardens for hosting Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day. Visit her March GBBD page to see blooming flowers all over the globe.

  1. Do you remember the name of this one Caroline? I like the color of the underpetal. Deeper than Lady Jane.

    1. It's the species Tulipa clusiana from 1607, not a named cultivar. I purchased them from Old House Gardens. $4 a bulb. The cultivars didn't return for me.

  2. So lovely! You're another who has the clusiana. Gosh, they're so pretty--I'll just have to enjoy yours and Jenny's.

  3. So elegant. I love tulips.

Everything does seem kind of messed up this year. Even some of the plants that I usually think of as indestructible have had some bad luck. Last week I just started smelling the grapey-ness of Sophora secundiflora and thought: oh, well ... I could at least rely on that. Nope. One windstorm later every single blossom shriveled up into dust.

  4. Those tulips are so pretty. I'm really going to have to see if I can find some.
Let's hope Spring really shows up on time. This yo-yo weather is annoying.
    Happy Bloom Day.

  5. Your tulips are beautiful. I'm right there with you, waiting on spring, last year was unusually warm, but I still feel like we're a few weeks behind schedule.

    Happy Gardening!

  7. Tulips. I should add tulips. My irises were a bust again. and my neighbor's irises look awesome...again. Boo. I just want to know how she lucked out and none her hers had even sent up bloom stalks before that last freeze.
