Christmas in May?

This serrano pepper plant seems to think so. Planted last spring, it survived last summer's drought, bloomed and fruited last fall, successfully overwintered, burst into bloom again a few weeks ago, and set oodles of peppers I never used or harvested. Serrano peppers

Suddenly I have a hankering for a Kung-Pao-style chicken. Who's got good recipes for ripe serrano peppers?

  1. Wow, great production on the serrano! Mine are just starting to fruit. How much shade do you provide? I've just added shade cloth on the west side, hoping this will increase the production.

    1. Not much shade at all, Laura. It's planted near the hollyhocks and they give it a little dappled shade in late afternoon.

  2. Wow! That's little pepper plant is loaded! I have 1 bell, 1 jalapeno and 1 ancho this year. My anchos always seem to bloom but not set fruit :( Your little serano clearly LOVES you.

  3. Breakfast potatoes...which of course we eat for dinner instead of breakfast because the way we make them, they are spicy (because of the peppers).

    diced red potatoes
    diced onion
    minced spicy pepper
cook all together, season with salt, pepper, and garlic. Serve with two over easy eggs.
