Weekend harvest

I harvested the last of the fall-planted veggies this weekend. Here's my haul:

Radicchio,
radicchio

carrots (three varieties),
carrots

and chard.
chard

In their place I planted watermelon ('Sugar Baby and 'Moon and Stars'), cantaloupe ('Hale's Best') and honeydew ('Sweet Delight'). I also cleared out a bunch of Bermuda grass (a never-ending chore). I have two more beds overgrown with the stuff...a project for another day!

What are you pulling out and putting down in your garden?

  1. Nice crop of carrots. Yes, time for summer crops.

    1. Looking forward to reading about your veggie garden.

  2. Oh, bermuda grass; got a bit of that creeping in, too. I'm impressed at how healthy your fall veggies look with these hot afternoons we've been having! That reminds me that I should do a final harvest of kale and chard and plant something else.

    1. I didn't photograph the carrots with the cracks and holes in them, ha! I find Swiss chard will make it through our blistering summers if it is shaded in afternoon, and I prefer chard to warm-season greens like Malabar spinach.

  3. Have the same never-ending battle with the ubiquitous Bermuda. Also the dreaded nut grass; and, although some people in TX use horse herb as a lawn of sorts, it's really a pain to keep out of the flower beds. I did that all day yesterday. I try to weed these on a day after we've had some moisture. The job goes faster and easier pulling from damp soil. Your vegetables are just beautiful!
Please let us know how the watermelon 'Moon and Stars' does. I've seen only photos and it looks wonderful.

    1. My front garden has turned into a sea of nut grass -- isn't it horrible! This is the first year I've given the melons any room at all so I'm hopeful. I've had some minor success with cantaloupe and honeydew but my watermelons have pretty much been a bust.

  4. Nice haul!! I know what you mean by the Bermuda being a "never-ending chore"--I have the same problem.

    1. My neighbor said he was going to plant Bermuda grass in the bare spots of his St. Augustine lawn. I warned him he better want Bermuda grass everywhere forever -- then offered to let him dig up all he wanted from my flower garden! I think he changed his mind.

  5. Cute little carrots! No veggies here but lots of herbs. Thinking of adding an 'edibles' garden in the front yard during fall. May have to have a little impromptu go-go to get some opinions. I'm not much of a veggie gardener.

    1. That sounds like a great project, Cat! I'm growing some 'Bright Lights' chard that would look gorgeous as an ornamental. Chard is super easy to grow, even from seed. If I can grow it, anyone can!

  6. We just picked the last of the fall/winter garden except for some chard that still looks OK and one cabbage that still looks like the head might mature before it bolts.

    1. Cabbage -- that reminds me I've got purple kohlrabi out there that needs harvesting. It was one of those things I planted because I had free seeds and it did so well that I have more than I can eat! Anyone got kohlrabi recipes?

  7. Great carrots! How do you get them so clean? I'm picking green beans and tomatoes. The big potato harvest will be this weekend, and I think my sugar baby watermelons will be ready in a week or two. Garden food rocks!

    1. I rinsed the carrots off before bringing them into the house -- lined them up like little soldiers on my wrought iron patio table and sprayed them with the hose. You must have planted watermelons in what, February? I admire you veggie garden risk-takers that plant two months before the Aggies say we should!
